What is CBT Rehab?
Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT) is a main technique used by our counselors and addiction therapists to teach patients how to change their unwanted behaviors by ultimately helping them re-interpret their thought patterns.
CBT Rehab is a type of psychotherapy program that focuses on how your thoughts, beliefs and attitudes affect your feelings as well as behavior. The goal of CBT is to teach you the proper and effective coping strategies for dealing with different problems throughout life.
How it works for addiction treatment?
One of the key aspects of CBT is that distorted thinking leads to distress and problematic behaviors, while thinking rationally with less negativity allows an individual to react to troubling life circumstances in a more effective way than using drugs or alcohol to deal with life’s stresses. A person who is trapped in addiction also tends to be trapped by negative thoughts and feelings. Depression is a common disorder among addicted individuals. By identifying negative thought patterns and the destructive behaviors they lead to, these individuals can begin implementing positive changes.
Successful cognitive behavioral therapy sessions consist of a healthy collaboration between a Destinations Wellness counselor and the individual receiving therapy. CBT emphasizes the need to identify, challenge, and change how a situation is approached and/or viewed. For example, a person may be plagued by negative thoughts such as, “Why even try to get completely sober? I will always relapse, so there is no point.” One of our experienced counselors can help them learn to replace these types of damaging thoughts with more positive expectations, such as, “I truly believe recovery is possible, and I will take the necessary steps to reach recovery.”
